Tetrahydrofuran (THF), also known as oxygenated cyclopentane or 1,4-epoxybutane, is a heterocyclic organic compound with the chemical formula C4H8O. It belongs to the ether class and is a fully hydrogenated product of furan. At room temperature, it is a colorless and volatile liquid with an odor similar to ether. Dissolved in most organic solvents such as water, ethanol, ether, acetone, benzene, etc., it is called a “universal solvent”. Partially miscible with water at room temperature. It has the characteristics of low toxicity, low boiling point, and good fluidity.
Tetrahydrofuran is an intermediate for the synthesis of the pesticide dibutyltin. In addition, it can be directly used to produce synthetic fibers, synthetic resins, synthetic rubber, and is also a solvent for many polymer materials, precision magnetic tapes, and electroplating industries. Tetrahydrofuran is an important organic synthesis raw material and a high-performance solvent, particularly suitable for dissolving PVC, polyvinylidene chloride, and butaniline. It is widely used as a solvent for surface coatings, anti-corrosion coatings, printing inks, magnetic tapes, and thin film coatings, and as a reaction solvent. When used in electroplating aluminum solutions, the thickness of the aluminum layer can be controlled arbitrarily and the brightness can be achieved. THF itself can undergo condensation (via cation initiated ring opening and re polymerization) to form poly (tetramethylene ether glycol) (PTMEG), also known as tetrahydrofuran homopolymer. PTMEG and toluene diisocyanate (TDI) are used to produce special rubber that is wear-resistant, oil resistant, has good low-temperature performance, and high strength; Block polyether polyester elastic material made from dimethyl terephthalate and 1,4-butanediol. PTMEG with a relative molecular weight of 2000 and methylene bis (4-phenyl) diisocyanate (MDI) are used as raw materials for the production of polyurethane elastic fibers (spandex, also known as SPANDEX fibers), special rubber, and some special-purpose coatings.
